The War of Art: Break Through The Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Stephen Pressman (Warner Books, 2002)

When I first discovered this book everyone from varying parts of my life seemed to discover it at the same time. We rushed to tell each other only to find the other had just discovered it as well. None of us could understand how a book this good that had been out so long wasn’t more well known. This book is amazing. Read it!

In The Shape of A Pocket by John Berger (Vintage,2002)
His Ways of Seeing is considered a classic but this collection of essays is dog-eared, underlined and always at hand. Whether he is writing about cave paintings, Morandi or Pentti Sammallahti he is focused on the importance of humanity and authenticity in art.

Letters To A Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke (Dover Publications, 2002) (The Steven Mitchell Translation)
Inspirational insights from the renowned poet into surviving and being an artist.

The Courage to Write: How Writers Transcend Fear by Ralph Keyes (Henry Holt 1995)

Compelling arguments for how and why utilizing your fear and anxiety can you create your most compelling and unique work.

The Writers Book of Hope: by Ralph Keyes (Owl Books, 2003)
An exhortation to the essentialness of persistence in art. The book is filled with countless examples of writers and projects that were turned down sometimes hundreds of times and yet today are well respected authors or writers that were considered less than promising and yet out achieved there more promising classmates.

Art and Fear by David Bayles And Ted Orland (The Image Continuum Press, 2002)
